I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start wiping up any water, position a container to catch any drips, and remove valuable possessions from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
