I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there promptly to get things sorted.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
