I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

In the meantime, begin wiping up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and remove important possessions from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
