I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour day or night. We will be there as soon as we can to save the day.

In the meantime, begin mopping up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away valuable things from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
