I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to find the main valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While you wait, start wiping up any water, place a container to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
