I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you rapidly to get things sorted.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant possessions from the area, and wipe up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
